SUSANNE PINKHAM
Glass
I grew up in South Carolina and moved to NM in 1970, finally settling in Taos in 1980. I graduated from UNM in 1978 with a degree in nursing and combined studio time with a career in nursing for many years before devoting full attention to my desire to be an artist. My husband and I have two sons who grew up in Taos. All three have been important supporters and critics of my work throughout my career.
I want my work to create a visual moment for viewers that totally engages their attention. I have worked with glass for almost thirty years and I continue to find the material challenging and expressive. My early work in glass was traditional leaded and foiled windows and lamps. Now I fuse, slump, paint, and sandblast glass . My newest interest is in lampworking, a process that involves using a torch to create objects with molten glass. I am currently making beads which become either jewelry or additions to other pieces. My glass education has been more informal than structured and has included many workshops and a great deal of trial and error.
I show my work at Taos Artisans Gallery, The Glory Hole Glassworks in Santa Fe, the Conley Studio in Madrid, NM., and by appointment in my workspace, Half Moon Studio.
